Celebrating 75 Years of Fraternal Brotherhood at ASU

Please plan to join us March 26-28, 2026, as we gather to celebrate Delta Tau Chapter’s 75th Anniversary. This momentous occasion will provide us all with an opportunity to see old friends, retell old stories and, once again, experience what it feels like to be part of a brotherhood of men.

The story of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity’s Delta Tau Chapter at Arizona State University begins with its chartering, after a year-long colonization period, at the end of March 1951 (see the full origin story below).

In the nearly 75 years since the chartering ceremony, Delta Tau has distinguished itself as one of the premier fraternity chapters not only at ASU but also among all of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity’s 225+ chapters. The Chapter has initiated nearly 2,000 young men, many of whom have gone on to notable careers in business, politics, entertainment, and community service. In addition, several have served the international Fraternity as staff members or in volunteer roles. In recognition of its accomplishments, the Chapter has received multiple Robert Adger Smythe Awards (Chapter Excellence), a Harvey T. Newell Award (Most Improved Chapter), numerous Chapter Programming awards, and many more accolades - including the 1972 International Dream Girl.

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded on March 1,1868, in Room 47 of West Range at the University of Virginia and has more than 300,000 initiates. Its Memorial Headquarters is located in Memphis, and more than a dozen Delta Tau brothers have served the Fraternity in a staff, international or regional officer, or alumni advisor capacity.

Delta Tau Chapter: From the Beginning

Shield & Diamond cover story June 1951

The chartering of Delta Tau Chapter at Arizona State College was the cover story of the June 1951 issue of Pi Kappa Alpha's Shield & Diamond.

The article, titled "Delta-Tau Chapter Chartered at Arizona State College," was written by colony president and founding SMC Don Ferguson. The opening paragraphs appear below, and you can click here to read the full article.

"Another step in the expansion of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity has been completed. This time it is toward the West, to Arizona State College at Tempe, following the famous advice of Horace Greeley, 'Go West, young man, go West.'

A year ago, on March 3, 1950, a group of men composed of members of IIKA who had transferred to Arizona State from other schools and other interested men met to see what could be done about forming a chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha at this school. From this group of men was formed the first colony of this Fraternity, scheduled to be installed as a chapter as soon as the requirements of the National Fraternity had been met, as well as the requirements set forth by the local IFC. After a long period of work and planning these requirements were fulfilled and our installation date was set for March 31, 1951.

On the Thursday preceding that date the installation teams from Beta-Delta, University of New Mexico; Gamma-Delta, University of Arizona; and Delta-Kappa, San Diego State, began arriving." (Keep reading.)
